Summary: “It’s you and me. It always will be, okay?”
Author's Notes: So I’ve made a personal challenge to write a drabble a day. W-wish me luck? D:
“That’s it!” Katara declared as she flung open the doors of their room and marched in, jerking the tie out of her hair and tossing it on the bed. “Royals are dumb! Dumb and selfish!”
Aang strolled in behind her, eyebrows raised. “Don’t let any of them hear you say that,” he said, sitting on the bed and watching her pace back and forth. “If they do, peace negotiations will never happen.”
“I just don’t understand!” she said. “I mean, they say they want to help their people but they don’t want to compromise!” She paused in front of Aang, hands on her hips. “We’ve been at this for over a year! Why can’t they just put away their stupid pride and listen to each other?!”
“Maybe--”
“They’re being stupid!” Katara said, not noticing that Aang had tried to speak. “Maybe if King Kuei were here it would be different, but he’s not. All we have is this King Kereda and Fire Lord…Zuko.” She spit the name out as if it were a curse.
Aang looked up at her, eyes wide. “Maybe they think they’re doing what they have to,” he said and Katara scoffed, sitting down beside him.
“How?” she asked, crossing her arms over her chest.
Aang smiled and wrapped his arms around her shoulders, pulling her to him. Twirling a lock of her hair between his fingers, Aang said, “Well, King Kereda is basically a stand in, right? He knows it, we know it, and most importantly, the people know it.” Aang shrugged. “He’s probably feeling really insecure and thinks he has to put up this big front of not backing down from the Fire Nation.”
“And Zuko has always been insecure so no big surprise there.” Katara sighed and burrowed against Aang. “I know, I know. I just really want this to be over with. I want to go home. Don’t you?”
Aang tightened his arms around her. “If…you want, you can take Appa and visit Sokka and Toph,” he said. “I know you miss them and…” He trailed of as Katara pulled away.
“And leave you here?” she said, eyes wide. “No way!”
Aang smiled half-heartedly. “I’ll be fine,” he said. “You’re miserable here and--”
“No!” Katara said, grabbing hold his hands. “I’ll be miserable out there without you, so it doesn’t matter!” She tugged him closer, staring into his eyes; blue against grey. “I told you when I first decided to go with you instead of going with Sokka and Toph: it’s you and me. It always will be, okay?”
Aang stared at her for a moment before smiling. “Yeah, always,” he agreed.
“Good.” Katara brought him closer and placed a slow, lingering kiss on his lips. Aang closed his eyes but, when she pulled away, they snapped open. He grinned, cheeks red.
“Okay, then let’s get some food. The next meeting is in a little bit and I’m starving!”
