“Omi, please make us some tea.”
Omi smiled over at Kaoru, who sat in a slow slung sofa that faced a large window, it's curtains pushed to the side. “It’s already brewing. It should be finished in a few moments.” He joined Kaoru at the window - not sitting down in the low slung sofa with him but standing behind it, hands resting on the backrest. “I’ve never seen it snow like this before,” he said, the words meaningless; simple conversation to pass time.
Kaoru hummed in agreement. “The school is so quiet. The snow brought with it the calm, it seems.” His sharp eyes never left the window. Omi’s never left him, watching as he smiled softly. “I prefer it like this.”
Omi opened his mouth, intent on agreeing but the teakettle whistled and Kaoru inclined his head, a clear dismissal. Omi left for the small kitchen and prepared their tea, carefully plopping two sugar cubes in his while leaving Kaoru’s plain. Bringing it out carefully, he handed Kaoru his before cupping his hands around his own, savoring the warmth.
After taking a sip, Kaoru said, “Is your tea sweet enough?” And though they weren’t facing each other, Omi could practically see the disapproval in Kaoru’s face. He smiled and took a sip of his own tea.
“One more sugar cube might be necessary,” he said, words nonchalant and Kaoru’s shoulders rose and fell in a deep sigh. Omi chuckled before glancing at his watch. “I’m going to check on the treasury records,” he said. He didn’t tell Kaoru to call him if he needed him. The reminder wasn’t needed.
As Omi walked over to his desk, Kaoru spoke up. “That’s not necessary.”
Omi paused, looking back at him. “Nakajima-san may be trying to hack into our records at this moment,” he said and Kaoru turned, one eyebrow raised high.
“You doubt your system?” he asked and continued before Omi could respond. “You can get revenge for Nakajima-san’s antics later. For now, come sit with me.”
Smiling, Omi joined him on the sofa. “As His Majesty wishes,” he teased gently and Kaoru cast a glare in his direction before transferring his gaze back to the gently falling snow glistening outside.
They sat together in silence for a few moments, before Kaoru shifted, leaning closer towards Omi. As if he’d been waiting for permission, Omi immediately dropped his arm across Kaoru’s shoulders and gently tugged him closer. Kaoru slumped against him, resting his head on Omi’s shoulder. Omi buried his face against Kaoru’s hair, breathing deeply, before pressing his cheek against Kaoru’s head and returning his gaze to the pale, frosty world outside.
Nakajima-san could wait. Right now, he would sit and enjoy the pleasure of his Queen’s company.
