“Ban-chan, I’ll go this way,” Ginji said, flashlight cutting through the darkness like a knife.

“Don’t go too far.” Ban glanced at him, amethyst eyes dark. “We don’t know who - or what - is down here.”

They’d been sent to find a small stuffed animal for a young girl named Haruko Sena. It was a cheap job - almost a favor, really - but when Haruko-san had stared up at them with tears trickling down her cheeks, Ban and Ginji had been unable to say no.

“You worry too much,” Ginji called out as he descended down a small flight of stairs. “She probably just dropped it somewhere down here. No one would steal a simple bear.”

“You’re too confident, Ginji-kun.”

Ginji gasped, taking several steps back. “A-a-akabane!”

Akabane swept closer, tipping his hat courteously. “There are things in the darkness. You should never go forward into it so haphazardly,” he said.

“R-right,” Ginji agreed. Like you, you’re in the darkness and Ban-chan, why didn’t you follow me? “What, uh, what are you doing here?” he asked. “Do you have a job here or something?”

Akabane smiled. “No,” he said. “I came here because I knew you would be here, Ginji-kun."

“O-oh.” Ginji swallowed noisily. “And h-how did you know that we would be here?”

Akabane chuckled. “I have my ways,” he said cryptically before stepping closer. “Where is your partner?”

“Oh, I’ll get him for you!” Ginji said, infinitely relieved to be given a chance to reunite with Ban. When he turned to leave, Akabane’s hand came down over his shoulder and he squeaked, staring at Akabane suspiciously.

“That’s not necessary,” Akabane said.

“I think it is!” Ginji said and attempted to pull away but Akabane pulled him closer.

“No, it’s not,” he said again, the words whispered across Ginji’s cheek. “See?” Akabane pressed something soft against Ginji’s chest. Looking down, Ginji saw that a small, green teddy bear was staring up at him with lifeless glass eyes.

“Wha…” Ginji took hold of it, eyes wide before looking up at Akabane. “What are you…”

“Say ‘thank you’, Ginji-kun,” Akabane said, smiling softly.

“…thank you?” Ginji said, blinking rapidly. Akabane stroked one gloved hand across his cheek before turning, disappearing into the darkness just as abruptly as he’d shown up.

Ginji stared at where he’d disappeared before looking back down at the teddy bear. That was…really weird. He shrugged before turning, going back up the stairs. “Look, Ban-chan, I found it!”
