Tooru hung up the phone and sighed deeply. Uncle’s angry with me, he thought, closing his eyes momentarily. Every night since Tooru told his family about his decision to stay at school, his uncle had called and tried to get him to come home. Tooru could understand why; Sayaka was getting help with her obsession so his uncle saw no reason why Tooru shouldn’t come home.
He doesn’t understand that I prefer to stay here. Tooru made his way slowly back to P-Room, head bowed. I love them all, even Sayaka, but I’m happy here. Happier than I’ve ever been before. But…they’re my family. I don’t want to disappoint them. Tooru was so lost in thought that he didn’t see the figure in front of him until he ran into it.
“Hey!” Yuujirou said, stumbling forward.
“Oh!” Tooru reached out and steadied his friend. “Are you okay? I didn’t see you there.”
“Yeah, I noticed,” Yuujirou said, smirking, before taking in Tooru’s downbeat expression. “Hey, what’s wrong?”
Tooru paused for a moment before answering. “I’m fine,” he said and smiled. “I’m…I’m just going to go to bed, okay?” Tooru turned to his dresser and started pulling out his sleeping clothes.
“But it’s still early!” Yuujirou said, watching Tooru undress, unconsciously taking in the lines and curves of his body. “You can’t possibly be sleepy!” He’s lying. Maybe Sayaka’s pestering him again.
“I am. Weird, isn’t it.” Tooru shrugged and smiled distantly again before getting into bed. He rolled over to his side, back to Yuujirou, blanket pulled high over his shoulder. “Good night,” he muttered, curling up. I don’t want to bother you with this, he thought. This is my problem, my decision. I should deal with it on my own.
Crossing his arms over his chest, Yuujirou stared down at Tooru’s back, brow furrowed. He’s keeping something from me. I can’t stand it! Ignoring the fact that he’d kept many things from Tooru in the past, Yuujirou got into bed with Tooru.
“Yuujirou, what…” Long arms wrapped around Tooru’s shoulders and a warm body pressed close against his back. Tooru blushed violently and placed his hands over Yuujirou’s. “What are you doing?!”
“Shhh.” It was a seductive little murmured against his ear. “You’re keeping something from me, Touchan. How can I help you if you won’t tell me what it is?”
“I…I don’t need any help!” Tooru protested, shaking his head against the plush of the pillow. “I just have some things on my mind.”
“Oh?” Yuujirou held him tighter, pressing his face against the nape of his neck. “Like what?” he asked, lips fluttering against the back of Tooru’s neck. “I’m your best friend, Tooru. If you can’t tell me, who can you tell?”
Tooru was quiet for a while, debating whether to give in or not. Finally, he took a deep breath and closed his eyes. “I’m going to move back home,” he said softly.
What?! Yuujirou jerked up, banging his head against the bunk above them. “Nnggg.” he rubbed the sore spot before looking down at Tooru, who had rolled over on his back and was looking up at him. “What?! You can’t!” he said, distress written across his face.
“Why not?” Tooru asked.
“Well, I-I mean…I thought you’d already decided to stay here,” Yuujirou amended.
“I did,” Tooru said , biting his lip. “But…but Uncle has been calling me every night, trying to get me to change my mind. He says that Sayaka’s getting better and that they all miss me-”
“This is nothing new!” Yuujirou said, shaking his head.
“I know, but now he’s beginning to get angry and desperate.” Tooru rubbed his forehead. “I don’t want to bother them.”
Angry? They’re getting angry with him? Yuujirou curled his hand into a fist, scowling.
Tooru looked up at him before looking away. “You’re angry with me too.” Everyone’s getting mad at me. It’s not fair!
“No!” Yuujirou leaned over him and cupped his cheek, forcing him to meet his gaze. “No, Tooru, I’m not. I’m mad at them for upsetting you.” And trying to take you away. “I just…”
“They’re my family, Yuujirou.” Tooru smiled weakly at him. “They’re the only ones I’ve got.”
“No they’re not!” How can you say that? Yuujirou bent over him, resting his forehead against Tooru’s collarbone. “No, you have us, Tooru. You can’t just leave us!” Me, you can’t leave me. Yuujirou tightened his grip around Tooru’s shoulders, but Tooru pushed him up, away. Yuujirou lifted off of him reluctantly, looking down at him with sad eyes.
“I’ll still keep in touch,” Tooru said, attempting to reassure him. “I’ll call every day and write once a week, I pr-”
“You’re already planning like this!” Yuujirou exclaimed. “How long have you been seriously thinking about leaving!”
Tooru bit his lip. “A little while,” he admitted. “I just…you guys are so important to me, all of you. But they’re my family. And I…” he trailed off, not sure how to say that he wanted to do whatever it took to make them happy, even if it meant sacrificing his own happiness. And this is such a small thing to give up… Even though, really, it wasn’t.
Yuujirou raised an eyebrow, gaze suddenly calculative. “Family, huh?” he said. Family. Many things constitute a family. He bent back over Tooru, their noses nearly touching. “What do you consider family, Tooru? What makes two people so close that you use the word ‘family’ to tie them together?”
Tooru blinked, blushing at their close proximity. “Ah…well, parents and children, of course. Brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles and nephews and nieces-”
“What about lovers.” Yuujirou interrupted eyes narrowing. “Do you consider two people who have not gotten married but are everything that a married couple would be, family?”
Tooru blinked rapidly. “I-I guess,” he said and his eyes widened when Yuujirou reached down and framed his face, thumbs stroking his cheeks gently. “Yuujirou, what…?”
“Tooru, you’re one of the most important people in the world to me,” he said, closing his eyes, resting his forehead against Tooru’s.
“I…you’re very important to me, too,” Tooru said, and Yuujirou’s eyes opened again, staring intently into his.
“How important?” Yuujirou asked, before pressing his lips against Tooru’s, a chaste, innocent kiss that nonetheless enflamed him and embarrassed Tooru.
“Y-Yuujirou!” Tooru said as he pulled away, looking up at him with wide eyes. “You-”
“I consider you family,” Yuujirou said.
He considers me…wait. As a lover? Is that what he was talking about? Tooru stared up at Yuujirou, eyes painfully wide now. “You consider me…like that?” he said, voice hushed.
Yuujirou nodded, biting his lip at Tooru’s stricken expression. This…may have been a bad idea. He bowed his head again, resting cheek to cheek with Tooru, arms tightening around his shoulders. “I do,” he whispered. “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be,” Tooru said, patting his head awkwardly. What do I say? he thought. Do I…consider him the same way? “I-I consider you closer than a friend, Yuujirou.”
“Really?” Yuujirou’s voice shook and Tooru winced, hugging him closer.
“Yes. I just…don’t really know what that means,” he confessed and Yuujirou pulled back, resting his hands on either side of Tooru’s neck.
“You can’t leave before finding out,” he said. “They’re your family, yeah. But if you leave, we may never figure out how you feel and, and whether or not we could work out.” I sound desperate, he thought but immediately dismissed it. If he could wear a dress all day to help other people, he could do this to help himself. “Just think about it, okay? Don’t decide to leave just yet. Promise me!”
“I won’t,” Tooru said. “I promise.”
“Good! Now, I guess I should let you go back to sleep.” He moved to get up before grinning slyly. “Unless you want me to sleep with you?” he asked, raising his eyebrow.
“I thought you said it was too early for sleep!” Tooru blushed and fell back to the pillows, rolling over so that he was facing the wall. “But you can if you want to,” he added softly.
Really?! “Really?!” Yuujro shimmied out of his clothes quickly and got into bed beside him. He resumed his former position, curling his arms around Tooru’s shoulders and tucking his legs behind his. “Thank you!” he said, cuddling his face down against the nape of Tooru’s neck. “Hmm, you’re so comfortable, Tooru.”
Tooru grinned and hugged a pillow to his chest. “Idiot,” he said, closing his eyes. “Go to sleep.”
Yuujirou waited until Tooru’s breathing had evened out and deepened before leaning over him, brushing his hair away from his face. “I can be your family,” he whispered before laying back down, resting his face against Tooru’s hair. I can be the best family ever, Tooru, he thought, tucking Tooru closer and closing his eyes. Within minutes, Yuujirou was asleep.
