Title: These Lazy Days
Author: [insanejournal.com profile] nanthimus
Rating: PG for innuendo?
Warnings: Uhm. Fluff. Sap. Relentless teasing?
Word Count: 1200
Prompt: Avatar: The Last Airbender - Aang/Katara - water - controlling the current like another limb
Notes: I think that older!Aang/Katara would be a playful, teasing couple; they would be comfortable with themselves and each other. I tried to incorporate those feelings here. Also, bending is really hard to write.

Aang woke slowly, arms raising over his head and back arching as he stretched, the shift of muscle and bone intensely satisfying, before slumping against the pillows. He looked around the small, open room that stood as the main living quarters, blinking sleepily. “Katara?”

No answer, save for a quiet chirrup from Momo, curled tightly against Aang as he shared his nap time. Momo was a tiny furnace that while uncomfortable in the late summer climate, was nonetheless welcome. Aang scratched Momo’s head before getting up. The small lemur nestled stretched out, clearly enjoying the extra room, and Aang chuckled.

“Little glut,” he said, before walking over to the large, open window that faced out from the front of the house. Pushing the pale blue curtain back, he squinted against the late afternoon sunshine. It glinted off the large lake that dominated the view, gleaming golden and orange, stretching out endlessly on the horizon.

Katara stood waist deep in the water, back facing him. He could see her raise and lower her arms, before stretch them out in front of her, slow and steady, the water following her movements.

Aang smiled and rested his elbows against the window’s ledge. He remembered, so clearly, when she’d first taught him those same techniques. She was just as precise now as she’d been then. He took in her slim form as she moved, quiet concentration as she pushed and pulled the water, controlling it like it was another limb, just another part of herself. She turned and Aang finally saw her face; eyes narrowed, brow furrowed, biting her lower lip as she manipulated the water before her. Sighing, Aang rested his chin in his hands, expression changing to the dreaming gaze that Sokka liked to tease him over. She’s still so beautiful.

After a moment, Aang blinked and grinned widely, hopping through the window and slaughtered down the sloping hill towards the lake, tall grass slapping gently at his calves as it waved in the breeze. As quietly as he could -- and holding back laughter -- he walked directly behind Katara, toes curling as he stepped to the edge of the lapping water.

Aang raised one hand and a small tendril of water rose from the lake, twisting and tightening as it took form. Biting his lip now, he brought his arm back and then swung it forward. The thin slip of water followed his arm precisely, lashing out and hitting Katara firmly on the backside.

“What?!” Katara jumped and spun around, all the carefully controlled water around her crashing downward. “Aang!” she fumed, putting her hands on her hips.

Bent forward and hands resting on his knees, Aang laughed helplessly, shaking his head. “I-I’m sorry Katara,” he gasped out. “I c-couldn’t -- oh, your face -- I couldn’t help myself.” He straightened up, brushing the tears from his eyes before putting on a serious face. “I-I’m okay now,” he said, meeting Katara’s eyes - and promptly falling back into hysterics.

Katara glowered and her hand shot forward, a strong tentacle of water wrapping around Aang’s arm and firmly pulling forward, throwing him down into the water. “You know, you’re right,” she said, a smirk on her face at his startled cry. “It is pretty funny.”

Aang slumped back, elbows deep in cool water, and grinned up at her. “Yeah,” he said, gently kicking at her, sending up a small splash that spattered against her still dry tunic. “So, what’re you doing?”

“Practicing waterbending forms,” She motioned for him to get up. “Come on, you can do it with me.”

“You want us to…practice?” Aang blinked and shrugged. “Aw, c’mon Katara. We’re both waterbending masters! What do we need to practice for?”

Katara frowned. “Because practice keeps us from getting rusty,” she started. Uh, oh, Aang thought. Lecture mode. “Besides, you never know when a new threat might-”

“Katara,” Aang started but she ignored him.

“-and you wouldn’t want be caught unawares-”

“Katara, I-”

“-besides, it certainly won’t hurt you to practice, after all, you are the Avatar and-

“Okay!” he said loudly, and she stopped, eyebrows raised. “You win,” he relented, stepping in deeper water. “Let’s train,” he said, standing facing her.

She smiled and nodded. “Good!” Mimicking his position, she slowly raised her arms, letting the power build until the water, followed her movements, sending an easy arc up into the air and back down. Aang copied her, his own water arcing up and down beside hers. He behaved for a couple of rotations before jumping to the side, swinging his water out and letting it circle around Katara before returning, gathering into a wobbly, watery, transparent ball that he rolled between his hands.

“Aang,” Katara warned and Aang cocked his head to one side.

“What?” he said. “I’m just making it more interesting.” He whipped the water out towards Katara and she caught the tip; for a moment, they each held on to the ends of the water whip as if it were skipping rope before Katara jerked backwards. Aang let go casually, letting it splash against her. Sputtering, Katara pushed her now damp hair out of her face with a determined smile.

“Alright, that’s it.” She skipped backwards and shot a small, speedy wave out. “It’s war now, Aang!” Laughing, Aang followed her lead, arming himself with several water vines that cut through the wave. Katara donned water wraps, the water an extension of her arms.

Staying evenly matched, neither of them were really trying to win. Instead, they tossed out fighting advice and gentle teasing, at times in the same breath. This went on late into the evening hours, the moon replacing the sun and casting a silvery glow, lighting up the water around them.

Aang and Katara ended up entangled, watery tentacles locking them together, nose to nose, breast to chest, thigh to thigh, panting heavily, sweat gathering at their temples despite being drenched. Aang’s appreciation of this position was evident against Katara’s hip and she smirked.

“Well, well, Mister master waterbender,” she said, pressing closer to him. “What do we have here?”

Grinning and letting his water drop back to the lake, Aang took hold of her hands and stepped backwards, tugging her gently. “Come with me and I’ll show you,” he said and she laughed at his attempt at being suave.

“Uh, no thanks,” she teased. “I think I’ll stay out here.”

“Really?” Aang twirled one finger around an invisible moustache, wriggling his eyebrows obscenely. “I can make it worth your while.”

“Hmm…okay,” Katara said after a moment. “But there’s just one thing you’ll have to do first.”

Aang leaned forward, eyes bright and lips nearly touching hers. “Name it.”

She placed her hands on his chest, eyes half-lidded. “You have to…” She pushed him backwards; caught off guard, he fell on his backside in the water. “You’ll have to catch me first,” she finished, pushing water forward and sending herself skidding backwards.

Standing up and wiping his face off, Aang grinned at her, a determined gleam in his eyes. “I think I can handle that,” he said and Katara could hear the promise in his voice.

She looked forward to him keeping it.
