Summary: He wished he could fix all of this.
Zell shifted his weight from foot to foot, fingers busy playing with his gloves as he waited for the classroom to empty. His usually cheerful, open face was somber and he ignored any inquiries from the students as they left the classroom and flooded out into the hallway.
When the last person, a short, pony-tailed girl, left, Zell walked in and closed the door quietly, staring awkwardly at the person sitting at the teacher’s desk.
“Uh, Rinoa?” he called out and her head snapped up, brown eyes wide as she realized who it was. She looked back down at her paperwork and Zell saw her shoulders raise and fall as she took a deep breath.
“Rinoa, we need to talk,” he said, stepping forward. “Look man, me and Squall di-”
“I know,” she said, interrupted gently. “I know you didn’t mean to hurt me.”
“No, really,” he pressed. “I’ve gotta say this shit, okay? I need to. W-we just, you were gone and you and Squall’s Sorceress and Knight bond has been so weird and stressed lately and we’d been drinking and-”
“Zell, stop.” Zell was horrified to see tears in her eyes. “I know that we’ve been questioning the bond and no one knows if it’s going to last o-or even if it should have happened in the first place.” She blinked rapidly and the tears ran down her cheeks. “But that doesn’t mean that he wasn’t mine a-and you two-”
“I’m sorry!” Zell said, blue eyes wide. “I’m sorry, Rinoa, you don’t know how fucking sorry I am.”
She paused for a moment before nodding. “I know,” she said and smiled; there was no feeling behind it and Zell know it was too late. “I know, Zell.” She picked up her pen and looked back down at her papers. “I…I have a lot of work to do.”
“…Oh. Okay.” Zell stared at her for a moment before turning and, shoulders slumped, walked out of the room. He didn’t look back and Rinoa didn’t look up.
NOTES: Look, I wrote it in fifteen minutes, okay. DON'T LOOK AT ME LIKE THAT.
