“Why am I doing this again?” Vaan asked, fidgeting in his seat as Balthier walked over to him. “I mean, doesn’t getting your ear pierced…hurt?”

Balthier chuckled and sat down in front of him, holding a needle and a small silver stud. “Don’t tell me you’re afraid of a little pain,” he said, one eyebrow raised high.

Vaan sighed and hunched over, shoulders curving. “You were suppose to tell me it wouldn’t hurt,” he muttered.

“Ah. I suppose I missed my cue,” Balthier said. “You want to look the part of a sky pirate, correct? And really, this is absolutely nothing compared to the battling you’ve done.”

“I guess,” Vaan said, not sounding reassured in the least.

Balthier nodded anyway. “Right then. Tilt your head to the side.” Vaan complied, biting his lip and squeezing his eyes shut tightly as he prepared for the needle.

How ridiculously adorable, Balthier thought, eyes trailing over Vaan’s face. How did this little thief manage to worm his way into my affections so quickly? Mentally shaking his head, Balthier took gentle hold of Vaan’s ear.

“Get ready,” he said and Vaan immediately tensed up. Balthier stabbed the needle into the tender cartilage and twisted it a bit, before pulling it out and replacing it with the small, silver, stud. “Done. That wasn’t too traumatic, was it.”

Vaan opened his eyes, left hand going up to touch the earring. “How does it look?” he asked, looking up and grinning.

Balthier was surprised at how pleased he felt at seeing that bit of silver in Vaan’s ear. It’s almost as if I’ve branded him as mine, he thought and smirked. “It looks good,” he said. “Did I tell you that it use to be mine?”

“Really?” Vaan said, tugging on it. “Uh, I guess it really will be helpful for being a sky pirate. It can be my good luck charm!”

Balthier chuckled and stood, looking down at him with a grin. “Perhaps. I dare say you need it more than me.” At Vaan’s frown, he chuckled again and tugged him upwards. “Come now,” he said. “There’s a whole sky to plunder.”
